Daycare Waitlists 101: A First-Time Parent’s Guide

Hannah Luchey, Marketing Coordinator

Preparing for your first baby comes with an endless to-do list. From choosing a pediatrician to setting up the nursery, there is so much to think about before your little one arrives.

One important task that often catches first-time parents by surprise is choosing the right daycare. Many families don’t realize that high-quality early learning programs, especially those with infant classrooms, can have waitlists. Planning ahead can make all the difference when it’s time to return to work.

Why Do Waitlists Exist?

In quality childcare programs, infant care is often the most in-demand age group because licensing regulations require lower teacher-to-child ratios. Having lower ratios ensures every child receives individualized attention in a safe, nurturing environment. Because of the smaller classroom sizes, openings only become available when children transition to the next age group, or if families move or change their care needs. As a result, available spots can fill months in advance!

When Should You Join a Daycare Waitlist?

One of the most common questions we hear is, “How early should I start looking for a daycare?”

The answer is simple: as soon as you know you’ll need it.

Many families begin touring centers and joining daycare waitlists during the second trimester of pregnancy. Others start even earlier. Waiting until your baby is born, or just a few weeks before returning to work, can significantly limit your options.

While every childcare program manages enrollment a little differently, here’s what you can expect when joining a Doodle Bugs! waitlist.

Understanding Our Waitlist

Each Doodle Bugs! center maintains its own waitlist for families interested in future enrollment when space is not immediately available. There is no fee to join the waitlist.

While many families assume waitlists are strictly first-come, first-served, enrollment offers are based on both waitlist placement and the type of opening available. This allows us to best meet the needs of both families and the center. Wait times vary depending on a child’s age and the schedule requested.

When a spot becomes available, we contact families by phone, text, and/or email with an enrollment offer. Families should respond to waitlist check-ins and enrollment offers promptly so we know they remain interested in care.

What You Can Do Now

If you’re expecting a baby and know you’ll need childcare, a little planning now can make all the difference later. Here’s how to get started with Doodle Bugs!:

  • Research the Doodle Bugs! location that’s most convenient for your family.
  • Schedule a tour to explore the center, meet our team, and learn about our programs.
  • Ask about current availability and estimated wait times for your child’s age group.
  • Join the waitlist if enrollment isn’t immediately available.
  • Stay in touch with the center as your due date approaches so we can keep you informed of any updates.

Starting early gives you more flexibility and allows you to make a thoughtful, confident decision rather than a rushed one.

Plan Ahead for Peace of Mind

The first day of daycare is a big milestone for both parents and babies. While it’s natural to feel nervous, knowing you’ve chosen a trusted early learning program can bring peace of mind.

By starting your search early, scheduling tours, and joining a waitlist well before you need care, you’ll give yourself the best chance of securing a spot and making your return to work as smooth as possible.

At Doodle Bugs!, we’re here to support your family every step of the way. Whether you’re expecting your first baby or planning ahead for the future, we’d love to help you learn more about our programs, answer your questions, and discuss availability at a location near you.
