Before asking your child about their day, put away your phone and give them your full attention. Children may be hesitant to share if they feel they aren’t being heard. Being present, even for a few minutes, is crucial.
Keep in mind that children may need time to relax and unwind before they are ready to talk, just like adults. If your child doesn’t say much in response to your first question, try asking again later.
If you’re still having trouble getting your child to open up, try connecting with them first. Engage in a fun activity together to help everyone loosen up and create a more open environment. Then, ask any of these questions and see where the conversation goes.
