Questions to Ask on Your Child Care Tour

As parents, we know that choosing the right child care setting is one of the most important decisions we make. It’s a place where our little ones will learn, play, grow and build the foundation for their future. But with so many options, walking into a tour can feel overwhelming especially when you’re not sure what to look for or what questions to ask. So how can you feel confident that a center is truly the best fit for your family?
In this blog, we’ll explore the most important questions to ask on your child care tour, why they matter and how they can help you find a nurturing, safe and supportive environment for your child.
What to Ask During Your Child Care Tour
While first impressions are important, asking the right questions can give you a clearer picture of what daily life will really be like for your child. Here are key areas to focus on during your visit:
1. Safety and Cleanliness
The safety of your little one is every parent’s top priority. Don’t hesitate to ask:
- How does the center handle security and check-in/check-out procedures?
- What is the cleaning routine? (Daily? Hourly? After meals?)
- How do you manage illnesses or injuries?
Their answers will help you understand how seriously they take the health and protection of all children. A clean, organized environment reduces the spread of germs and ensures children can explore safely.
2. Teacher Qualifications and Ratios
The teachers and caregivers are the heart of any child care program. Ask:
- What qualifications or training do teachers have?
- What is the staff-to-child ratio?
- How long have teachers typically worked here?
Lower ratios and experienced teachers mean your child gets more attention, support and consistency throughout their day.
3. Daily Routine and Learning Approach
Every child learns differently, so understanding the center’s style is key. Ask:
- What does a typical day look like?
- How do you balance play, learning and rest?
- Do you follow a specific curriculum or philosophy? (Montessori, play-based, themed learning, etc.)
A predictable routine helps children feel safe, while a thoughtful learning approach boosts their development socially, emotionally and academically.
4. Communication with Parents
Good communication gives you peace of mind and keeps you connected to your child’s day. Ask:
- How do you keep parents updated?
- Do you send photos, notes or progress reports?
- Who should I contact if I have questions or concerns?
Knowing how the center communicates lets you feel supported as a partner in your child’s learning.
5. Behavior Guidance and Emotional Support
Even little ones have big feelings. Understanding how the center handles emotional development is essential. Ask:
- How do you support children during conflicts or tough moments?
- What methods do you use for behavior guidance?
- How do you help children feel safe, seen and heard?
This will give you insight into whether their approach aligns with your parenting style and your child’s needs.
6. Meals, Snacks and Allergies
Food plays a big role in your child’s comfort and well-being. Ask:
- Do you provide meals and snacks, or do parents send them?
- How do you handle allergies or dietary needs?
- What does a typical menu look like?
Clear food policies help ensure every child stays safe and nourished throughout the day.
7. Outdoor Play and Activities
Children need space to run, climb and explore. Ask:
- How often do children go outside?
- What safety measures are in place on the playground?
- What types of activities or enrichment do you offer? (Music, art, sensory play, etc.)
An engaging environment boosts creativity, confidence and physical development.
Striking the Right Balance
A child care tour is about finding that sweet spot between your child’s needs, your family’s values and the center’s philosophy. Here are a few ways to make the most of your tour:
- Trust Your Instincts: If something feels “off,” ask more questions or explore other options.
- Observe Interactions: Watch how teachers speak to and comfort children. Warm, patient communication speaks volumes.
- Pay Attention to Atmosphere: Do the children seem happy? Engaged? Comfortable? This tells you more than any brochure ever will.
- Take Notes: After touring multiple centers, notes will help you compare important details later.
