May 2012 Curriculum Notes
May flowers are in bloom, and we are very much looking forward to watching the children grow and flourish in the classroom through fun and exciting activities! Here’s a peek at some of the hands-on thematic learning experiences that will add to the songs, stories and games that are an important part of every doodle day:
Curriculum Themes
- Pond Life (April 30–May 4, 2012 ) – Turtles, ducks, frogs, fish – there are so many things to learn about in this theme dedicated to Pond Life! You will be focusing on integrating the world of pond animals and plants into all areas of the classroom, using fun and exciting games, books and activities. Preschool/PreK Letter of the Week: M
- Great Gardens (May 7–11, 2012) – April showers bring May flowers! The warm weather, along with our budding Doodle Bugs! gardens, will certainly inspire you during this bright and colorful classroom unit. Spend some time outside and bring in various nature items that will support theme. Preschool/PreK Letter of the Week: N
- Fairy Tales & Nursery Rhymes (May 14 –18, 2012, May 21–25, 2012) – Mother Goose is on the Loose, along with Cinderella, Snow White and the Big Bad Wolf! This 2-week theme will focus on popular stories and characters that are a big part of creating a literacy-rich childhood. Preschool/PreK Letter of the Week: W, Review
- Fitness Fun (May 28–June 1, 2012) – This week will be a celebration of being fit and healthy! Your focus will be on exercise and teaching the children to make smart choices that will develop into strong, life-long habits. Preschool/PreK Letter of the Week: X
Center Event Tips
Families are looking forward to your classroom’s participation in the following center events. Please ask your director for any center-specific details/instructions.
“Almost” Cinco de Mayo (May 4, 2012) – Just because it is May 4th doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate the popular Mexican holiday of Cinco de Mayo! – olé!
- Make maracas with the children.
- Dance the Mexican Hat Dance, pretending to be Mexican jumping beans.
- Break open a hand-made piñata with goodies inside.
Mother’s Day Celebration (May 10 & 11, 2012) – Invite visitors into your classroom to celebrate Mother’s Day the doodle way!
- Set up exciting games, yummy snacks and engaging activities for your all-day party Thursday and Friday.
- Create colorful invitations.
- Make beautiful gifts and cards.
Let’s Get Physical (May 30, 2012) – Get ready, get set, exercise! At 10am, everyone at the center will stop what they are doing and get movin’ and groovin’!
- Play music and dance.
- Stretch your muscles.
- Take a jog around the playground.
Additional Notes
- Teacher Appreciation Week (May 14–18, 2012) – Complete a Smile award for a deserving coworker! Teacher Appreciation Week is our way of recognizing our wonderful Doodle Bugs! faculty in fun and exciting ways.
- Memorial Day (Monday, May 28th) – Doodle Bugs! is closed.
